Art Spiegelman on “Si Lewen’s Parade: An Artist’s Odyssey” at the 2016 Miami Book Fair
FROM THE PUBLISHER: Si Lewen’s Parade is a timeless story told in a language that knows no country—a wordless epic that, despite its muteness, is more powerful than the written or the spoken word. First published in 1957, The Parade is a lost classic, newly discovered, remastered, and presented by Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Maus. Reproduced in a unique two-sided accordion-fold format with an extensive overview of the artist’s career on the verso, The Parade is a celebration of art and the story of recurring war as Si Lewen experienced it over the past 90 years, watching the joyful parades that marked the end of World War I lead into the death marches of World War II and the Korean War. As The Parade unfolds, the reader is taken on an unforgettable journey of sequential images.

The Parade: A Story in 55 Drawings
A short film produced by the International Institute for Restorative Practices A saga of never-ending war by an artist who saw the armistice parades of WWI morph into the death marches of WWII. "First published in 1957 and long out of print, I am pleased to see The Parade reprinted and distributed by the International Institute for Restorative Practices. I have donated all of my remaining artwork and the rights to all of my books and writings to this new graduate school. The IIRP is dedicated to 'restoring community in a disconnected world,' a purpose that is consistent with the themes of my own life's work. I trust that the IIRP will make an important contribution toward making the world a better place." -Si Lewen, 2006

Si Lewen: “The Parade" at The Menil Drawing Institute- 2023
"Si Lewen: The Parade" presents an epic series of sixty-three original drawings by Polish-born artist Si Lewen. Without a single written word, "The Parade" speaks to cycles of war, the seductive glory and pomp, followed by soldier enlistment, community deprivation, devastating destruction, death, and heartbreak. When the war ends, the cycle repeats. "Si Lewen: The Parade" is curated by Kelly Montana, Assistant Curator, Menil Drawing Institute.
